Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. Feminist Frequency is a site that hosts videos and commentaries analysing portrayals female characters in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit educational site that explores gender representation in popular cultural narratives is founded and is directed by Sarkeesian. She's committed to removing stereotypes about women and how they appear in popular media. Additionally, she works to raise the awareness of harassment on social media targeted at women and marginalized groups of people. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. Apart from being a well-known public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen conference and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Interested in issues concerning gender identity and feminism from at an early age, she created her website Feminist Frequency in the year 2009 when she was still a student at the university. The ambitious lady planned to launch a web series that would examine gender-based representations in video games and found herself the target of an online harassment campaign. However the attack could not deter her instead it made her more determined to be a feminist media critic. Many awards have been presented to her in recognition of all the contributions that she contributed to. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her role as a critic of media and also founded Feminist Frequency. The nonprofit examines how women are depicted in pop culture today.
